Are You Being Held Back By Low Back Pain? Have You Tried Everything To Fix It, But Feel Let Down?
There are countless potential causes of lower back pain. Often, people are advised to rest, which may initially feel good, especially when fear of movement or a sense of restriction prevents them from doing their usual activities.
What Is Back Pain?
Back pain is, without a doubt, the condition we treat the most at Vertical Sports Physical Therapy. We have worked with thousands of individuals experiencing low back pain, which can result from a variety of causes. It might have been caused by something as simple as bending forward to put on a shoe or making the bed. It can also stem from repetitive movements like golfing, an impact injury while playing contact sports, or even a fall.
What are the symptoms of Back Pain?
Symptoms of back pain can vary; from a dull, constant ache to sharp, debilitating discomfort. Symptoms may include stiffness, limited range of motion, muscle spasms, or pain that radiates to the hips, legs, or shoulders. Back pain can be triggered by poor posture, overuse, injury, or conditions like arthritis or herniated discs.
Many people attempt to relieve their symptoms through rest, over-the-counter painkillers, or temporary fixes like ice packs or heat pads. Others may have tried quick solutions such as back braces, massage, or even exercises they found online. While these methods might provide short-term relief, they often fail to address the root cause of the pain, leading to frustration, irritability, and even hopelessness.
Additionally, some may have tried invasive treatments like injections or even surgery without success. For long-term improvement, it’s crucial to focus on tailored approaches that target the underlying problem and restore function effectively.
What Is Our Approach To Fixing / Treating Back Pain?
We understand the complexities of low back pain firsthand, as the founder of Vertical Sports Physical Therapy – Dr. Adam Shildmyer – was injured during his college basketball career. Through his own experience, he learned the importance of intentional rehabilitation to prevent recurrence, as low back pain is a common injury that often comes back if not managed.
Typically, managing back pain initially involves hands-on treatment. This can include soft tissue massage, traction to relieve disc pressure (especially if symptoms radiate down the leg), or mobilizations to restore normal mobility to stiff segments of the spine. Conversely, if a spinal segment moves too much, the focus shifts to building stability. Each case is unique, as the back comprises many tissues, and it’s crucial to address the right one since not all tissues require the same approach.
We emphasize the importance of a comprehensive assessment. At Vertical Sports Physical Therapy, clients receive a thorough evaluation and hands-on treatment. This is paired with expert-level exercises designed to build a personalized program that helps clients return to doing the things they love.
